On my way back from getting a pedicure in Woodinville today (on a workday? Gasp! Well hey, I got lots of Instagram work done while my feet were being worked on!) I stopped by the new Rooster bakery on 202.
I’d seen a gorgeous photograph of darling little peach pastries on a Woodinville Facebook group and absolutely had to have some for myself. (The photographer was the talented Jorge Martinez).

While I was there, I noticed the bakery now carries a few lunch items, including soups, sandwiches, quiche and pirozhki. I’m grateful to see so many vegetarian options. I was tempted by the quiche, but ended up taking home the spinach pirozhok.
I hadn’t eaten anything all day, and was ravenous by 1 p.m. when I got back home. Still, I took a little extra time to set a pretty table for myself. I assembled a small salad (including tomatoes grown on the bakery’s grounds) and set out a pretty vase of fresh snipped flowers from my Woodinville front yard.
The pirozhok was huge, and I wasn’t sure how many darling peach pastries I’d have room for afterwards. That might help me save a couple for my boyfriend’s after-dinner dessert tonight. The only thing missing from this meal is perhaps a cup of soup, but I knew I’d be quite full after finishing the spinach and egg bun main course.
Note that Pirozhok is the term for one bun; pirozhki is used to denote plural items. These Russian filling-stuffed baked buns are different than pierogis, which are pastries from Ukraine and Poland.
I thought Brian Carter’s 2016 Oriana white wine was the perfect accompaniment for this simple little meal. Its crisp acidity would pair well with the salad and spinach pastry, I figured, and its peach flavors would go well with the peach dessert pastries.
The little peach pastries were so perfectly formed and gloriously sugared, it was actually difficult to bite destructively into them! But I managed. The Oriana wine was as delicious with these as I’d hoped.
It just takes an extra minute or two to transform a boring utilitarian workday lunch into a special pick-me-up feast.
There’s nothing wrong with eating alone at a beautifully decorated table and enjoying one’s dishes and textiles from previous naughty shopping sprees.
