On Sunday, I dragged my friend Angie (who runs Angie’s Organizing Solutions) out wine tasting. We knew it would be scorchingly hot in our homes that day, and I convinced her that tasting rooms are very highly well air conditioned so the wine doesn’t spoil. She kindly agreed to accompany me on a day-long outing in Woodinville’s wine districts.
We began our day with an early brunch at Heritage Restaurant + Bar. (Well, not “early,” but 11am is quite early in the morning for a night owl like me!)
It hadn’t occurred to me before that this fairly new restaurant offered brunch. I asked our waitress about it. I was dismayed when she told me they’d been serving brunch for the past six weeks! All this time I could have been brunching at Heritage in rotation with The Commons and Purple Cafe!
I was eager to show Angie this beautifully decorated restaurant. She loved the paint color on the walls and spent a bit of time trying to figure out exactly which shade it was.
Since we were going out wine tasting right after the meal, I ordered iced tea instead of a deliciously alcoholic brunch beverage (though I dearly wanted a mimosa).
I did look very longingly at this tray of Bloody Marys as it passed me by!
Angie was incredibly tempted by the Eggs Benedict, so ordered that without too much deliberation. She chose fruit as her side, and we promised to swap a few of my breakfast potatoes for a few of her berries.
The special of the day was some sort of foraged mushroom omelette. The restaurant was cheerfully willing to omit the meat that would have gone into it (I forget? Bacon?) to make it a vegetarian option for me. The mushrooms inside were so incredibly good – I appreciated that there were several different kinds.
The chef sent out complimentary housemade cookies – heart shaped, how adorable! Angie and I both nibbled on them while trying to decide if they reminded us of shortbread or of our childhood favorites, “Pecan Sandies.” I suppose there weren’t really all that many pecans in them, so I’ll guess they were shortbread.
Angie ordered the Cookies and Creme dessert – a vanilla pot-du-creme with three housemade cookies. One cookie was lemon ginger, one was gluten-free peanut butter (perfect for Angie!) and the last was chocolate chip.
For my dessert, I chose the Rainier Cherry sorbet (housemade, of course) which came with another delicious cookie. The sorbet was flavorful and so refreshing!
Angie admired the charming vintage-look dish it was served on. Meawhile I kept myself well hydrated with water and my iced tea, preparing my body for the wine tasting extravaganza to come.
My weirdo friend ordered hot coffee with her dessert – on a 92 degree day? I suppose the restaurant’s nice cool air conditioning gave her the option to do so!
The patio looked quite inviting, and soon enough it was full of people enjoying brunch, fresh air and sunshine. I noticed that not only did a member of the wait staff put out a bowl of water for the dogs visiting the patio, but they also thoughtfully put ice cubes in the water to keep it colder on such a hot summer day. Very sweet and considerate!
On our way back to the car, we stopped to admire the lovely garden in front of the Gathering Fabric quilt shop.
On a not-quite-so-hot day, wouldn’t it be so pleasant to sit on these beautiful wooden Adirondack chairs sipping cocktails from the bar?
If you’re looking for another brunch option in Woodinville for weekend mornings, I’m delighted to report that you can pop into Heritage Restaurant + Bar for a lovely meal, friendly service and a relaxing start to your day.
