Pairing a Woodinville Wine With Vegetarian Sushi

On a recent surprise sunny spring day, I wanted to eat lunch outdoors in my freshly gardened backyard here in Woodinville. I’d just picked up a couple trays of vegetarian sushi from Metropolitan Market in Sammamish. Note that I didn’t bring out any chopsticks with my meal – if I’m eating lunch at home with no one to observe me, I might as well use my freshly-washed hands to pop these into my mouth!

It had been a long workweek, so I thought I’d treat myself to a glass of wine with my meal, and perhaps a short nap after lunch (snoozing on the couch with sun streaming in the window is my favorite way to nap!) I took inventory of my white wines (as you can imagine, wine bloggers accumulate a lot!)

I settled upon a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from Matthews Winery. Love that it has a screwcap – I could pour a glass for lunch and save the rest of the bottle for dinner later or lunch tomorrow.

Alas, the rain suddenly started again and chased me back inside to eat my meal. I found the Sauvignon Blanc delicious, but perhaps a bit too flavorful. (That’s a good problem to have!) I suspect if I’d had fish to pair with it instead of veggies, it might have brought out the fish flavor very well. My avocado and cucumber sushi of course don’t have a lot of flavor until I dip them in a bit of soy sauce, so they didn’t compete with the wine.
